OUR VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers at the gabions

Friends of St Giles Hill Graveyard meet for a workday once a month. We usually meet on the first Saturday of the month but it can vary. We have midweek meetings in the summer months.

Our aim is the improve the graveyard, keeping it in good shape for the community and wildlife. It's also a social location with time to have a coffee, chat, and a snack.

There are several tasks that volunteers can do in the graveyard:

  • Cutting vegetation in and around memorials.

  • Mowing or strimming.

  • Maintain paths.

  • Clearing ground ready for sowing seed.

  • Shrub planting.

  • building dead hedges.

We also need people interested in the history and heritage of the site to investigate burials and family histories to help transform the names on monuments into personalities and keep their memory alive. If you would like to help with this research, please contact us.

Fundraising is another area where support would be welcomed – please contact us if you would like to help – particularly if you have experience.

Archeological activities

We have been preparing the ground for an archeological investigation to discover the lost St Giles Church. This would entail carrying out gravity and ground penetrating radar surveys over the area where the church probably stood.
